Hello everyone! Imagine this: you just tied the knot and headed off for a dreamy honeymoon in the Caribbean. Sounds perfect, right? Well, that’s exactly what Alex and Emma Steinke thought when they jetted off to Grenada. But life had a plot twist waiting for them in the form of Hurricane Beryl!
The 26-year-old newlyweds, who got married on June 15, arrived in Grenada on June 29, expecting sun-soaked beaches and relaxing excursions. Instead, they were met by a rapidly intensifying storm.
By July 1, Hurricane Beryl made landfall as a Category 4 storm with winds reaching up to 150 mph. Talk about an unexpected honeymoon adventure!
“It was a bit surreal,” Emma told PEOPLE. Coming from the Midwest, where hurricanes are unheard of, it was a lot for her to process. Alex, on the other hand, had experienced Hurricane Florence while stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. But for Emma, this was a first.
After a 12-hour flight from Chicago, the couple landed in Grenada to what was initially just a tropical storm. However, the weather took a dramatic turn, and by the time they touched down, the island was under a hurricane watch.
Emma shared a peek into their “hurricane haul” on TikTok, showing how they prepared to “survive” the storm. Following the resort’s instructions, the couple stayed inside, keeping their phones charged and conserving water and food.
Despite the scary situation, Emma remained optimistic. “There’s been a lot of rain and some water got into our room, but it was minimal,” she said. The couple is still hopeful about enjoying their vacation once the storm passes. They’re even considering a smaller trip in the U.S. if things don’t improve.
Their flight back home is scheduled for July 6, and they’re keeping their fingers crossed that it won’t be affected by the storm. Emma expressed concern for the island’s residents and the hardworking resort staff, hoping everyone stays safe.
Hurricanes can be daunting, but Alex and Emma’s experience shows the importance of resilience and a positive attitude, even in unexpected situations. Let’s hope the rest of their honeymoon brings sunny skies and beautiful memories!
