Teen Struck By Lighting During Yard Work

Ladies and gentlemen, a Florida teenager is on the road to recovery after surviving a lightning strike while working in a storm. Daniel Sharkey, 17, experienced a shocking and life-threatening event that many only hear about in cautionary tales.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in Altamonte Springs. Sharkey, who owns a lawn care company, was diligently weed-whacking a neighbor’s yard when the unexpected happened. Lightning, capable of striking miles away from a storm, found its target in Sharkey. “It came straight through the tree,” he recounted to Fox 35.

Sharkey was quickly taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he began his recovery. Despite his immense gratitude for surviving, the teenager is still in considerable pain.

“My chest hurts, and everything is sore,” he shared, reflecting on the harrowing experience. Feeling fortunate, he added, “I couldn’t scream – at least, I don’t think I was making any noises.”

Sharkey credits a nearby tree for saving his life. The tree took the brunt of the lightning strike, sparing him from a direct hit. “If it was a direct hit, I probably wouldn’t be here today. I am lucky that tree was there,” he said.

As the storm approached, Sharkey believed he had more time to finish his work. “I saw the storm was approaching; it was thunder and lightning, so I thought I had time,” he explained. “I was pretty sure I could finish up because we have a siren that goes off when it’s lightning, and it had not gone off yet.” However, the lightning struck suddenly, leaving him incapacitated.

“I couldn’t move any of my extremities … it felt like static on you … everything was tingling like your hands and arms were asleep,” Sharkey described. This terrifying moment left him lying on the ground until neighbors rushed to his aid.

Lightning strikes are rare and often deadly, making Sharkey’s survival all the more remarkable. “It was just a complete fluke. It’s a one-in-a-million shot to get hit by lightning, and it’s not 100% survival. Luckily, that tree was there, and I am lucky to be alive,” he reflected.

Sharkey’s story is a stark reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous nature of storms. It’s a tale of luck, resilience, and the importance of taking immediate shelter when thunderstorms are near.

We wish Daniel Sharkey a swift and full recovery and hope his experience serves as a cautionary tale for others. Stay safe, folks, and always heed the warnings when storms are brewing!
