On July 10, the Union County Sheriff’s Office in Monroe, N.C., received a 911 call about a child found wandering alone on Waxhaw Indian Trail Road, a residential area outside Charlotte.
The boy, who is non-verbal and autistic, couldn’t communicate his address, posing a significant challenge for the officers. With no immediate leads, the Sheriff’s Office turned to their K-9 unit, bringing in Sheriff’s Deputy B. Belk and his bloodhound, Remi, to help solve this mystery.
Here’s where things took an unusual turn. Instead of the standard practice of using an item of the child’s clothing to track his scent, Deputy Belk employed a “reverse” tracking method. According to Lieutenant James Maye, this approach is quite rare in police work. Normally, police dogs track from a person’s last known location to find where they are now. This time, they did the opposite.
Belk collected the boy’s scent using a piece of gauze on his forearms and the back of his neck. With this scent, Remi set off on a backward trail, successfully following it for about half a mile to locate the boy’s home in a nearby neighborhood.
The entire operation was executed flawlessly, and the boy was soon reunited with his relieved family. It was determined that he had managed to leave home without his parents noticing, and no criminal activity was involved.
This heartwarming incident underscores the incredible capabilities of police dogs and their handlers. Remi, only a year old and trained internally since he was a puppy, demonstrated extraordinary skill and adaptability.
