West’s front office acumen was also evident in the 2000s when he helped assemble the dynamic duo of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal and brought in head coach Phil Jackson.

West’s passing follows closely on the heels of another loss for the basketball community. Just two weeks prior, NBA Hall-of-Fame forward Bill Walton died at the age of 71. Walton’s career began with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1974, one season after West retired.
